Micky Hoogendijk’s “The Meetings of the Waters” series, created in 2020, is a profound exploration of the birth and essence of womanhood. Inspired by a dream and unknowingly titled after a song by Irish singer Fionn Regan, this series captures five women exposing their naked bodies to the elements of wind and water against the backdrop of the receding tide. She found this desolate landscape she feared was nonexistent in the Waddenzee. With its broad horizon and exposed sea bed, it provides a timeless and ethereal setting for these photographs.

The series draws a parallel to Sandro Botticelli’s iconic painting “The Birth of Venus,” made around 1485, which depicts the goddess Venus emerging from the sea on a shell. In a similar vein, Hoogendijk’s images feature women in poses that evoke the symbolism of rebirth and creation. The naked woman at the center of one photograph, with wind in her hair and ripples around her, recalls Botticelli’s Venus standing proudly, illuminated by the rising sun. However, unlike Botticelli’s Venus, Hoogendijk’s figures do not cover their bodies with their hands but instead embrace their natural form without shame, symbolizing a modern reinterpretation of the goddess of love and fertility.
