A short movie series about the making process of “The Ones I,” a 4-meter high bronze sculpture. The series captures the three stages: the conceptual and artistic creation, the technical process of crafting the large sculpture, and the final journey to the Venice Biennale.
Micky Hoogendijk is inspired to share her vision on a grander scale, envisioning her sculptures as focal points in public spaces, where they serve as both a beacon and a mirror to the community This vision stems from a desire to forge connections and create a central gathering point within neighborhoods, thereby enhancing the communal fabric through art. Hoogendijk’s decision to celebrate life through art sees her transforming moments of joy and pain into sculptures that resonate with universal themes of humanity. This narrative is particularly poignant in the context of public art, where her sculptures invite engagement and contemplation from a broad audience. Each piece in the series is a dialogue between the artist and the observer, emphasizing the unseen bonds that connect us all. Hoogendijk’s art encourages us to look beyond the surface, to the emotions and connections that define our shared humanity. As these sculptures find their place in public arenas, they become more than just art; they are invitations to interact, reflect, and feel.
Micky Hoogendijk employs two distinct methods to create her bronze sculptures, each suited to different scales and intricacies of her artistic vision.
Cire Perdue Method (Lost Wax Method): This traditional technique starts with a plasticine model of the sculpture, over which a silicon mould is created at the Kemner bronze foundry. Once set, liquid wax is poured into the mould to form an exact replica of the plasticine sculpture. A plaster mould is then applied over the wax model, which is fired in a kiln to remove wax and harden the plaster.
Molten bronze is poured into the heated mould, replacing the wax. After cooling, the plaster is removed, revealing the bronze sculpture which is then refined through grinding, polishing, and waxing to achieve the desired finish.
Sandcast Method: For larger sculptures like “The Ones – XXL,” Hoogendijk begins with a digital model created by 3D designer Patrick Beverloo. Using this digital model, sections of the sculpture are milled from polystyrene, assembled, and coated with plaster to add detail. These sections are embedded in a sand mould, formed by mixing sand with resin and activator. After curing, the mould is split, and bronze is poured into the hollow cavity created by the removed polystyrene. Once cooled, the sand is cleaned off, and the bronze pieces are welded together, refined, and patinated to achieve the final look.
Each method reflects Hoogendijk’s meticulous approach to capturing the essence of human connection through sculpture, combining artistic vision with technical craftsmanship to bring her creations to life in different scales and dimensions.
