In 2020, Micky Hoogendijk created the “Ave Maria” triptych, a touching ode to motherhood and femininity. This series features the faces of three young women, each exuding innocence, vulnerability, and purity. Their naked bodies are delicately veiled with intricate lace patterns, inspired by an antique box Hoogendijk found in a shop. Upon closer examination, she discovered the engraved image of the Annunciation, which she transposed onto her Virgins. This symbolic layer represents the moment the angel Gabriel tells Mary she will bear God’s child, emphasizing the indispensable role of women in the creation of life. The “Ave Maria” series not only honors Mary, the mother of all mothers, but also reflects Hoogendijk’s own experiences with loss and resilience, turning personal pain into universal beauty.
